Property Taxes

In St. Clair, property owners receive a tax bill twice a year.

The "summer" taxes are mailed the first week of August and payable without penalty through September 30.  Summer taxes can be paid at the City Hall with a 4% penalty through the last day of February, after which all delinquent taxes are turned over to the County Treasurer's Office.  The County will add their own penalty and taxes must then be paid at the County Treasurer's Office in Port Huron.  Dollars collected from the summer taxes are distributed to the State of Michigan, St. Clair County Community College and the City of St. Clair.

"Winter" taxes are mailed the first week of December and payable without a penalty through the last day of February.  As of March 1, all delinquent taxes are turned over to the County Treasurer's Office.  The County will add their own penalty and taxes must then be paid at the County Treasurer's Office in Port Huron.  Dollars from the winter taxes are distributed to East China School District and St. Clair County.

The amount of your taxes is determined by two factors: (1) the taxable value of your property as determined by the City Assessor and (2) the millage rate set by each agency receiving tax dollars.

Senior Citizen Deferments

Taxpayers age 62 and older with a household income of less than $25,000 are eligible for a property tax deferment on their summer taxes.  This means, payment of the summer taxes normally due by September 30 can be deferred until February 15 without penalty.  Note: this is not an exemption or reduction in the tax amount.

A deferment is valid for one year.  A deferment application must be submitted to the City Treasurer's Office each year by September 30 to be eligible to defer that year's summer taxes.
