Hillside Cemetery Regulations
      Business

To preserve the appearance of Hillside Cemetery, the Board of Cemetery Trustees reminds you of the following rules & regulations regarding the decoration of cemetery lots

A winter wreath, grave blanket or one pot of artificial flowers may be placed on graves from November 1st until April 1st of each year.  Any decorations not removed by April 1st will be considered abandoned and they will be removed and disposed of by the cemetery management.

One American flag or State of Michigan flag per grave, no larger than 8.5 x 11", can be placed at graves between April 1st and November 15th.

One pot of fresh flowers only may be maintained on graves from April 1st to November 1st of each year.  Flower pots or urns designed to hold fresh flowers will be permitted on graves or in a cemetery-approved pipe stand designed for this purpose. Any pots not in use by July 1st will be removed. Receptacles for cut flowers will not be permitted.

The planting of hedges or flowers on graves or lots is strictly prohibited. Existing hedges, trees, flowers, and shrubs will be removed whenever they become unsightly or dangerous or encroach upon an adjoining lot or path. Plantings shall be permitted only under supervision of the DPW Supervisor.

Placement of decorations on lots or graves that do not fall within the guidelines of the cemetery rules and regulations will be removed. This includes markers or decorations made of material other than granite, marble or bronze, ornamental lawn monuments, decorative stone, and eternal flames. Cemetery grounds will be monitored by the DPW Supervisor and decorations not in compliance with rules and regulations will be removed. A Spring cemetery clean-up is performed in mid-March and a Fall cemetery clean-up is performed in mid-October. Decorations from the prior period should be removed by these times to maintain the year-round appearance of the cemetery.

Placement of decorative items on gravesites such as fencing, edging, borders, broken stone, in ground plantings or other items that interfere with the care and maintenance of cemetery lots is prohibited.
